The Stones lie in the shape of a cross, as we know the Christian Cross today, but of course, 5,000 years ago, this symbol was not associated with Christianity. Even more exciting for us is that they are older then the stones at Stonehenge. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Dun Carloway Broch ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - HISTORIC ISLAND LOOP Growing up, this was our favourite attraction to visit. In those days visitor numbers were very low and we were able to play here all day pretending it was our castle. Things have changed just a bit. This monument, built around 200 BCE, lasted as a home and defence for around 100 years but Dun Carloway may have been used for almost 1000 years which is very impressive. For those with the surname Morrison, it is thought that this was a fortress for your clan as late as 5000 CE. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Gearrannan Blackhouse Village ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - HISTORIC ISLAND LOOP Here you get the chance to see a whole village of Blackhouses (as you saw a single example on our other tour). There are often examples of crofting activities, such as weaving, shearing or herding. They also have a shop and a café to enhance your visit. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Norse Mill & Kiln ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - HISTORIC ISLAND LOOP This stop involves a short, 10 min walk, across a rough walk way. My family were engaged, in the 1960s, renovation of this site, and so we honour it with a stop on our tourer service. Currently it is without funding to operate safely and has been closed for internal access. However the buildings themselves are worth a visit to see the thatching and stream system that was built to help Vikings grind their cereals. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Bru Àirigh ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - HISTORIC ISLAND LOOP This Sheiling is a fine example of an early house, built from stone, that crofters would use during the summer when they spent long period of time away from home, cutting peats to bring home. This structure is perhaps more elaborate than most of the ones we saw as children out on the moors but nonetheless is worthy of a stop and review. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, St Columba’s Church ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - SHORE AND SEA LOOP Two attractions in one here. **Aignish Farm Raiders Monument** On the walk way to the Church is this memorial, one of three dedicated to the land struggles experienced on the Island. This one is for the Aignish Farm Raiders. It stands proudly in remembrance of the people of Point (the local area) who fought an oppressive use of their land, potentially going to jail, which eventually forced reforms to Scottish law. **Eaglais na h-Aoidhe, St Columba’s Church** This is a chapel from the medieval period and is an Ancient Monument and Grade A building. St Catan, a contemporary of St Columba, founded the site in the 6th century. The site became the burial site for our families namesake, the MacLeods of Lewis.. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Iolaire Memorial ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - SHORE AND SEA LOOP The Iolaire Monument is dedicated to those sailors who drowned on New Years Day 1919 must have experienced. So wild, so cold and so close to home. Sinking at the entrance of Stornoway harbour, on what should have been such a joyous day, 280 islanders, coming home from fighting on the Front, struck rocks meters from the shore, with 205 dying. You can see paintings of some of those soldiers at the Airport and at various locations around Stornoway. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Memorial to the Great Wars ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - SHORE AND SEA LOOP The memorial is an 85ft tall granite tower dedicated to those men from the Island who never came home from the Great War and those who perished in the terrible 1919 sinking of HMY Iolaire – which is visited later in the tour. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## The Blackhouse at Arnol ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - SHORE AND SEA LOOP This attraction offers what we call, the smell of the island. They have a peat burning fire in the middle of a dwelling house which was shared by family and animals alike. The smell of peat reminds us of our innocent childhoods playing in these areas. Take some time to check out the model 1920s house as well, as a sign of how living progressed on the island with the advent of sewerage and electricity. ### ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS ## Ness Historical Museum ISLE OF LEWIS TOURS - SHORE AND SEA LOOP This museum, shop and cafe is dedicated to the local history of the area, which reflects the history of the island people as a whole. Two gallery spaces are dedicated to seasonal exhibitions throughout the year. --- ### [FAQ, About & Contact](https://daylightwanderer.com/faq-about-contact/) **Published:** January 14, 2026 **Author:** admin@hebrideanservices.com **Content:** ## FAQ, About & Contact [FAQ](#faq) [About](https://hebrideanservices.com) ## FOR ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS If we haven't covered your question above then please feel free to drop us a line and we will do what we can to help. There are **no toilets on board** and we do advise that the only opportunity for a comfort break will be at some of the sites we visit if they are operating. ##### Do you accept children? We accept children 3 years old to 16 years old. There must be at least 1 adult (17+ yrs) with up to two children. Our tour guide is [PVG cleared](https://www.mygov.scot/pvg-scheme) and has completed [Safeguarding certification ](https://scvo.scot/support/running-your-organisation/safeguarding)for young and vulnerable groups. ##### Do you offer concession rates? We offer Adult and Child rates. Child rates cover 2 to 16 years old. Adult rates cover 17 years and up. 0 - 1 years travel free but are expected to travel in a parent or guardians arms. ##### Do you cater for disabilities? Neither the vehicle, nor the locations visited, are suitable for wheelchair users or those with large medical support equipment. Our goal is to save enough income to, one day, upgrade our vehicle to address this. All other disabilities are welcome and please let us know if there are any special requirements and we will do our best to assist. ##### Can I take my dog on tour? We love dogs, however, on our standard tours we do not allow any animals other than guide dogs for the blind and we hope other guests will support this stance. On our Private Bookings we do allow up to two dogs as this gives us plenty time to clean the minibus for future guests who may have allergies. ##### Where can I get answers to more questions?
